In a detailed historical study Roger Beckwith has demonstrated that the clause division represented by the Masoretic Text represents a reaction against messianic interpretation of the text while the clause division accepted in the translation above follows the Septuagint, Theodotion, Symmachus, and the Syriac Peshitta.7 Thus the clause division adopted here is both strongly and widely supported early in the text tradition.
